The United States slapped sanctions on a Syrian state-run oil company Friday for doing business with Iran, as part of efforts to get Tehran to end its disputed nuclear programme, dpa reported.

The Syrian company Sytrol provided some 33,000 metric tons of petrol to Iran valued at over 36 million dollars in April, an amount that exceeds the trigger for sanctions to take effect under a recently enacted law aimed at third parties doing business with Iran's oil sector.

The US noted that while the sanctions were part of its efforts against Iran, it also condemned Iran's support of the Syrian regime.

Earlier Friday, the US imposed sanctions on Hezbollah for its ties to President Bashar al-Assad.

Western countries have stepped up sanctions on Iran in recent month in an effort to halt the country's nuclear programme.
