Salehi, Brahimi discuss Syrian developments

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and UN special envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi on Sunday discussed the latest developments in Syria, IRNA reported.

The talks were held immediately after Brahimi's arrival in Tehran. They will attend a joint news conference later.

Brahimi's visit to Tehran takes place in line with Tehran's diplomatic efforts to help resolve the crisis in Syria. This is his first Tehran visit since he took over the mission from Kofi Annan.

He was welcomed by deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, Hossein Amir Abdollahian at Mehrabad Airport. He is also scheduled to talk with Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili.

Brahimi earlier toured Saudi Arabia and Turkey to discuss Syrian developments. He will also visit Baghdad after Tehran.

The former UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, resigned from his position as the UN special envoy to Syria due to the obstacles created in the way of implementation of his six-point peace plan.

Annan visited Tehran twice during his mission.
