Iranian Minister: NATO plan to deploy Patriot missiles harmful to Turkey

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 22 / Trend /

The deployment of NATO's advanced surface-to-air Patriot missiles along the Turkish border with Syria would be detrimental to Turkey, PressTV reported with the reference to Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi.

"The deployment of Patriot missiles in Turkey will play no role in [maintaining] Turkey's security and this will be harmful to Turkey," Vahidi said.

The Minister added that the presence of Western foreign forces in Muslim countries has always caused problems and conflict among them.

Vahidi stressed Iran is against the presence of Western countries in regional interactions.

Earlier it was reported that Turkey will receive six Patriot batteries from NATO. Germany, the Netherlands and USA will supply them.

Turkey appealed to NATO in the second half of November with a request to provide it with Patriot systems for protection against Syria's possible air attack.

The Syrian army periodically bombs the border areas with Turkey. In October, six Turkish citizens were killed by Syrian Armed Forces in another direct hit.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 30,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
