Special advisor for international affairs to the Leader of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Ali Akbar Velayati said with regard to the upcoming presidential elections in Iran, that if country's next president is not a conservative, it will be a tragedy, Mehr reported.
"If conservatives unite, the elections can be won," Velayati said, speaking at the event titled to the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, held in the city of Qom.
He noted that if the conservatives fail to prevail at the upcoming elections, then they will have to wait for another 8 years (two presidential terms) before trying out again.
Next presidential elections in Iran are slated to be held on June 14, 2013.
The voters will select the successor of current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for the third straight time due to country's constitutional laws.
Velayati noted that there should be no intrigue or distractions at the upcoming elections.
Last month, Velayati said that unity among the conservatives is an important factor at the upcoming elecitons.
"It is a question of unity among conservatives. There is some intrigue going on between them, however they all should be put aside," he added, mentioning the post 2009 presidential elections in the country.
