The selection of Ali Shamkhani as the new head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council guarantees home security, National Security and Foreign Policy Parliamentary Commission (NSFP) Spokesman, Hossein Naghavi Hosseini said, the Islamic Consultative Assembly News Agency (ICANA) reported.
He went on to note that, controlling borders, the nuclear issue and internal threats are among the main priorities of the Supreme National Security Council.
The Council is the highest decision-making entity on national security issues, he said, adding that Shamkhani`s experience in military and security issues can be effective to improve the home and foreign security of the country.
The Supreme National Security Council's duty on issues with the Iranian nuclear program has not ended after the transfer of the case from the Council to the Foreign Ministry, he said, adding that according to law, the foreign ministry has to implement the Council's decisions on the nuclear issue.
He also emphasized the importance of the fight against smuggling, particularly drug trafficking, stating that the Council should plan to boost efforts on the issue.
Iranian media outlets informed yesterday that Iranian president Hassan Rouhani appointed Iran's former commander of the IRGC navy with the rank of rear admiral, Ali Shamkhani as new head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
Shamkhani also held the post of minister of defense from August 1997 until August 2005 in the government of former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami.
Currently, Shamkhani is a military advisor to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and director of Iranian Armed Forces' Center for Strategic Studies.
