Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino arrived in Tehran today, IRNA news agency reported on Dec. 21.

During the two-day visit, Bonino will discuss the latest bilateral and regional developments with Iranian officials.

It is the first time in nearly 10 years that Italian foreign minister visits Iran.

In November, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with Bonino during his day-long visit to Rome.

Iranian ambassador to Rome, Jahanbakhsh Mozzafari pointed out the important status of Rome in Iran's foreign policy, and said that new developments have taken place in the two countries' relations.

"Italy is an important country of the European Union and it has positive position with regard to resolving Iran's nuclear standoff with the West," the ambassador added.
