Under the instruction of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, the Islamic Republic has suspended the fulfillment of some of its commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as stated by an informed official at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Trend reports referring to ISNA.

According to the official, the implementation of programs related to the suspension of some of Iran's obligations under the Comprehensive Joint Action Plan was noted in the statement of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran.

Iran's Atomic Energy Agency official added that the commitments on the sale of additional enriched uranium and heavy water, which is the first step of Iran in the first 60 days, will not be fulfilled.

The JCPOA, signed between Iran and the P5+1 group (US, UK, Russia, China, France and Germany), was put in force in January 2016. The US announced its withdrawal from the deal in May 2018 and imposed sanctions on Iran in November of the same year. In late January 2019, the European signatories of the JCPOA (namely the UK, France and Germany) officially announced the establishment of INSTEX, a special financial mechanism formed with Iran for backing the said agreement.

On May 8, 2019, Iran stated that it would not be fulfilling its commitment to sell additional enriched uranium and heavy water in the JCPOA for 60 days, basing its decision on the promises of the European signatories on backing the deal not being fulfilled.

Iran has announced that it will stop its commitments on the Arak reactor and the enrichment of uranium by 3.67 percent if the EU does not take steps for protecting the agreement and beginning negotiations on trade and banking sector with Iran within the 60-day period.
