(euronews) - The annual Festival of Lights draws thousands of visitors every year who come to France's second city for the four day spectacle. Virtually all of Lyon's major buildings are illuminated, drawing gasps from many in the crowd. At first there is the sound, then the light. The effect is beautiful, this woman said. The light shows have come a long way since the festival was celebrated with candles, reports Trend.

The displays have gone hi-tech, dazzling shows of video, synthesized sound and music synchronised by media software packages. The designer of the show summed it up in three words: tradition, emotion and innovation. The first Fetes des Lumieres was held more than 150 years ago when Lyon residents gathered spontaneously to display lit candles. Today the festival appeals to a broad range of visitors who come to witness the extravagant displays of light and music.
