A provincial official has said that 7.5 million tons of freight are expected to be carried through an under construction railway segment in southeastern Iran once the project is finalized.

Danial Mohebi, the governor-general of the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan, has said that the initial plan had envisaged a capacity of 2.5 million tons for the railway linking the port city of Chabahar to Zahedan City, Tasnim news agency reported.

However, the projected capacity has increased by five million tons following measures taken aimed at developing the infrastructure, he said.

He further urged the officials to facilitate the construction of the 610 kilometers-long railway.

The railway segment which will eventually link the southeastern port city of Chabahar to Afghanistan has been completed by 25 percent.
