Tehran, Iran, Sept. 12

Trend:

The number of water desalination plants active across the country currently stands at 78 with a capacity of treating 415,000 cubic meters of saltwater daily, an official with Iran’s Water and Wastewater Company said.

Around 78 water desalination plants, with a capacity of treating 415,000 cubic meters of saltwater daily, have been launched across the country, Shahin Pakrooh said on September 12, according to the official website of Iran’s energy ministry.

Noting that the country has made a breakthrough in treating saltwater compared to previous years, he said water desalination plants aim to alleviate the shortage of potable water in urban and rural areas located near seas, he added.

He noted that the country plans to make use of state-of-the-art technology and like Australia, Japan and China turn more saline water to freshwater and address the country’s water crisis.

According to experts and reports, 16 Iranian provinces covering nearly 60 percent of the population are on the verge of water tension and addressing the ever-growing issue of water shortage should be fundamentally dealt with by the end of the Sixth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2017-22) before reaching a point of no return.
