China formally agrees to Iran resolution at IAEA

The five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany found a common position on Iran Thursday at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), when China agreed to support a draft resolution on Tehran's alleged nuclear weapons projects, dpa reported.

Although a senior Chinese diplomat had agreed to the text, the Beijing government formally joined the other five powers only at the last minute, after the IAEA board that is to vote on the text had already started earlier Thursday, two Western diplomats said.

The text, now co-sponsored by the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China, is to be taken up by the 35 countries on the IAEA board of governors on Friday.
