BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 9. The diplomatic opportunity to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) concerning Iran’s nuclear program remains open, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani said at a press conference in Tehran on September 9, Trend reports.
During a press conference in Tehran on September 9, the MFA spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, announced that the restoration of the JCPOA hinges on the mutual return of all parties to the agreement. The deal can be revived once all parties fulfill their commitments.
"Iran has never left the negotiating table and views these talks as a diplomatic solution to safeguard its interests," Kanaani stated.
He expressed regret that Western countries have thrown a wrench in the works of the multilateral diplomatic process.
"Iran believes that the path to mutual understanding should remain open, and opposing sides must demonstrate a practical will to restore the JCPOA," he added.
It is worth noting that in January 2016, Iran and the P5+1 group (the US, Russia, China, the UK, France, and Germany) implemented the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
In May 2018, the U.S. announced its withdrawal from the deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran.
By the end of 2020, the Iranian parliament decided to pursue a strategic plan in the nuclear sector to counter the sanctions, leading to a suspension of additional steps and the Additional Protocol as per the nuclear agreement.
Consequently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) faced a reduction in monitoring capabilities by 20–30 percent.
