US navy boats enter Iran’s waters due to technical problems - IRGC
Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 13
By Fatih Karimov - Trend:
The US navy boats entered Iranian territorial waters due to technical problems, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi said.
"Investigations indicate that the US entered into Iranian waters due to failure of the navigation systems," Fadavi said, the state IRINN TV reported Jan. 13.
Earlier the IRGC confirmed that it has seized two US navy boats with 10 sailors at 16:30 (GMT+3:30) on Jan. 12. The IRGC Navy's Public Relations Department, in a statement released on Jan. 13, declared that the US navy boats entered Iranian territorial waters near Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf illegally.
Fadavi further said that the issue is being settled, without providing further explanation.
Meanwhile IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sharif said earlier that what has been said about releasing the US Navy crew is speculation and Iran is not going to free them without proper investigation.
US Secretary of State John Kerry has contacted Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the issue. Zarif reportedly had assured his US counterpart that the crew would be released promptly.
