Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has appointed Brigadier General Gholamhossein Gheibparvar as the new commander of the country’s Basij paramilitary force.

Ayatollah Khamenei has tasked the new commander with creating new units within the paramilitary force aimed at monitoring the “enemy’s activities” and preventing them from infiltrating the country, Fars news agency reported.

The supreme leader in his letter appointing the new commander has said that the decision came following an advice by the commander in chief of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari.

Gholamhossein Gheibparvar will replace the former commander of the paramilitary force, Brigadier General Mohammadreza Naqdi.

In the meantime, Naqdi has been appointed as the deputy commander of the IRGC for social and cultural affairs.
