Theft is the most frequent crime in the Iranian capital city of Tehran, an official says, adding that each month 9,000 cases related to theft are filed in courts.

Last year the Judiciary launched special branches for theft investigation and this year, it is planned to launch special branches on executing theft-related verdicts, Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said, Mehr news agency reported August 29.

However, Tehran Police Criminal Investigation Department chief Abbasali Mohammadian said during the same session that statistics show that theft rate declined by 15 percent in the first four months of the current Iranian year (since March 20) compared to the same period of last year.

As an example, the grand theft auto rate decreased from 53 percent to 38 percent year on year, he explained, adding that fighting crime hubs in the city proved to be an effective way to reduce theft rates.

“Last year 120 reports were filed on grand theft auto on a daily basis. This, however, has reached 60 reports per day this year.”
