International Community Should Put Pressure on Official Tehran to Free Students in Iran: Head of Organization

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend D.Khatinoglu / Releasing three students of Tehran Technical University who were convicted of political accusations became possible as a result of pressure by the international community on Iran.

"The international community should put pressure on official Tehran in order to free the convicted students in Iran," said the law observer of the Iranian students, Chairman of Progressive Women Organization, Zahra Erfani, who is functioning in Switzerland.

According to the decision of the Tehran Revolution Court, three students of the Technical University were sentenced to over-all seven years in prison. Ahmad Gassaban, Majid Tavakkoli and Ehsan Mansouri were arrested nine months ago due to accusations of 'disrespect towards graves of Imams and sacred people' and 'insulting mullah of Gum city and religious figures' in the magazine of the University. The lawyer of the students, Mohammadali Dadkhah said that the students were justified by the Appeal Court. They will be released on 22 December.

On 16 December the UN General Assembly condemned the pressure of official Tehran on the students and required to free the jailed students. Under the international pressure, the Iranian Government will have to free other imprisoned students, Erfani reported to Trend on 20 December from Zurich. "The international Organization on Human Rights, especially UNO and Amnesty International, should strengthen the pressure on official Tehran. I think that the EU countries should not be indifferent towards the law breaks in Iran. They should take economic and political sanctions against Iran," Erfani said.

Several arrested students were linked with the communist organizations, IRNA reported. Arresting students is illegal although they are linked with any flanks, the Secretary General of Communist Workers' Party, Asgar Karimi, said by telephone from London.

"One month ago at least 40 students were arrested during the student demonstration. They incurred hard tortures and the detention place of many of them is unknown. The released three students incurred hard tortures during nine months. If the international community would not put pressure, each of three students had to stay in prison more than two years," Karimi said. According to him, the pressure on the Iranian Government is expected to be strengthened.
