General economic situation in Azerbaijan (January 2011)

In January 2011, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Azerbaijan increased 0.8% as compared to the same period of 2010 and made up 3 .4 bln manat. The amount of the GDP per capita composed AZN 382.7 ($ 479.9 ).

Production of GDP in non-oil sector in January 2011 increased by 6.6 percent, making up 41 percent of GDP, 51.9 percent accounted for oil and gas sector, 7.1 percent of value added price created at the expense of the net taxes on production and imports.

Total production in all sectors of the economy decreased 2.7%, amounting to 63.2% of GDP where 56.8% of GDP (2.0 billion manat) falls on the industry. In services, production of added value price increased by 7.2% to 29.7% of GDP compared to the same period of last year.

In January 2011, the amount of industrial production in Azerbaijan composed AZN 2.5 billion, which is 1.6% less than January 2010.

In January 2011, industrial production in the public sector amounted to 482.8 million manat with a decline of 1.2 percent on an annualized basis, and in the private sector - 2007.7 million manat with a decline of 1.7 percent. The share of public sector accounted for only 19.4 percent of total industrial production, private sector - 80.6 percent.

Production in the extractive industry in January (1853.9 million manat) made up 74.4 percent of total industrial production, manufacturing (475.9 million manat) - 19.1 percent, in the electricity and gas sector - 146.3 million manat, or 5 9 percent, while the remaining amount (14.3 million manat or 0.6 percent) was in the water, wastewater and solid waste. Decrease in production in the extractive industry amounted to 3.7 percent, growth in the processing industry - 3 percent, in electricity and gas sector - 1.9 percent, reduction in water supply and waste was 0.5 percent.

In Azerbaijan, in January 2011, agricultural production grew by 6.6 percent, including vegetables and plant products - by 5.5 percent, livestock production - 6.7 percent. Forestry and fishing enterprises in the country in January 2011 produced products amounting to 102,300 manat and 9,600 manat respectively.

The amount of export increased by 10.14% as compared to last year and comprised $1572.8mln, while import increased 62.91%, totaling $593mln. Azerbaijan exported 481 types of goods and imported 2,903. During the reported period, the indicator of export exceeded the indicator of import and thus, the black ink of import-export operations amounted to $979.8mln.

Nearly 432.0mln manat was invested in the economy of Azerbaijan in January 2011, an increase of 1.7% from the figures of the same period of the last year.

In January 2011, a rise of the retail goods turnover got restored amid continuing rise of the community services and was 8.5%. The amount of retail goods turnover comprised 1.6bln. In particular, 69.4% accounted for retail trade, 30.6% - paid services.

In January 2011 , the prices for consumer goods and tariffs for services rose 0.8 percent compared with the previous month, and compared to January 2010 grew by 8.3 percent in 2010 (data from State Statistics Committee). The prices for food products in January 2011 rose 1.5 percent compared to January 2011, non-food products remained unchanged, and tariffs for service dropped 0.4%.

In January 2011, the nominal income of the population totaled AZN 1910.7m illion which is 14.3% more as compared to January 2010. Thus, during this period, the nominal income of the population per capita increased by 12.8 to 212.4 manat.

The supply of the dollar is increasing in the domestic monetary market, which leads to the strengthening of the manat. But the Central Bank keeps the situation under control and prevents excessive appreciation of the manat, as was done last year. In January 2011, the average rate of manat to the U.S. dollar was 0.80 manat per dollar, the euro, - 1.06 manat per euro, the Russian ruble - 2.65 manat per 100 ruble.
