Prices and situation in consumer market in Azerbaijan (January-May 2014)

The Azerbaijani consumer market continues developing rapidly (9-10 percent) in 2014. The retail trade facilities, catering trade points are developing in the country both qualitatively and quantitatively.

The Azerbaijani trading networks sold consumer goods to the population at 8.333 billion AZN in January-May, 2014, which is 8.8 percent more than in the same period of 2013, according to the country's State Statistical Committee. Legal entities ensured 11.5 percent of trade turnover, individual entrepreneurs - 51.5 percent, fairs and markets - 36.8 percent.

The Azerbaijani retail trade facilities sold food worth 4.271 billion AZN with an increase of 2.2 percent and non-food goods worth 4.062 billion AZN with an increase of 16.4 percent.

During this period, every citizen of the country acquired consumer goods at 177.4 AZN per month or by 16 AZN more than in Jan.-May, 2013.

Paid services worth 2.445 billion AZN were rendered to the population in January-May, 2014 or 6.7 percent more compared to the same period of 2013. Legal entities ensured 62.4 percent of this growth and rendered the services worth over 1.829 billion AZN.

Each citizen bought paid services worth 52.1 AZN per month in January-May, 2014 or 2.7 AZN more than in the same period of 2013. Transportation, public utilities and communication services prevail in the structure of paid services. Besides improving the material condition, great using of paid services by the population is associated with the fact that the structure of rendered paid services is being improved. A network of companies is being developed in this sector.

Prices

The prices on consumer goods and tariffs on services fell by 0.8 percent in May, 2014, compared to the previous month and rose by 1.7 percent in January-May, compared to the first five months of 2013.

Thus, inflation in Azerbaijan, which is one of the indices of macroeconomic stability, hit only 1.7 percent in May, 2014.

Prices for food products dropped by 1.9 percent in May, compared to the previous month and the prices for non-food products and tariffs for paid services rendered to the population remained unchanged.

The prices for food products rose by 1.5 percent, non-food products - 3.6 percent and tariffs in the service sphere increased by 0.3 percent during the reporting period, compared to Jan.-May, 2013.

The base index of consumer prices, calculated except for the goods and services subject to seasonal changes (fruits and vegetables) and the prices of which are regulated by the state, remained unchanged in May and increased by 1.7 percent in five months compared to Jan.-May, 2013.

Tariffs for cargo transportation in Azerbaijan's transport sector fell by 0.7 percent in May, 2014, compared to the previous month. The passenger transportation tariffs have dropped by 0.2 percent in Azerbaijan in May. Passenger transport by air to the CIS countries and other states has decreased by 0.1 percent and 7.5 percent, respectively. Tariffs for cargo transportation by waterway to CIS countries increased by four percent in May, compared to April, while the passenger transportation via railway fell by 11.3 percent. The tariffs for oil transportation via pipelines have dropped by 0.7 percent in May.

The industrial producer price index increased by 2.4 percent in May, 2014, compared to the previous month and the prices increased by 2.4 percent compared to January-May, 2013. The prices increased by 2.7 percent in the oil and gas production in April compared to the previous month and decreased by 0.5 percent compared to January-May, 2013.

The producer price index in the processing industry remained unchanged as of May, 2014.

The producer prices in the field of extraction of stone, sand, salt, gravel and other products of the extractive industry decreased by 0.1 percent last month. The growth of producer prices in mining of metal ores in May, made 1.3 percent.

The producer prices in wood processing and production of wood products rose by 0.1 percent, in the production of rubber and plastic products - one percent, tobacco products - remained unchanged, furniture - 0.6 percent, building materials - 0.6 percent, pharmaceutical products - remained unchanged. The prices fell in the sphere of food production - 1.9 percent, chemical industry - 0.5 percent, production of paper and cardboard - 1.7 percent.
