SOS Sevan civil initiative is holding a rally in front of the Armenian parliament on April 28.
Its participants are urging deputies to vote against amendments to the law on rehabilitating Lake Sevan. Environmentalist Silva Adamyan believes the amendments will cause the loss of the lake, Armenia Today reported.
The Armenian parliament is considering a bill on amendments to the law on "Establishing a comprehensive rehabilitation program, preservation of the ecosystem of Lake Sevan".
The project envisages a 40 percent increase in the annual volume of water from Lake Sevan. The rally participants are protesting the program of artificial breeding of 50,000 tonnes of fish in the lake.
An increase in water volumes from Sevan is profitable for several oligarchs, according to the members of the All-Armenian Ecological Front. Some oligarchs have fish-breeding companies in the Ararat region. So, they are interested in Sevan water, while other oligarchs have hotels on the coast of Lake Sevan, which could be under water in five years.
