Georgia has today joined the EU sanctions against Syria. Information about this was posted on the official website of the EU.
The foreign ministers of 27 EU member countries on July 23 decided to impose an embargo on arms supplies to Syria. Under the agreement, the EU will examine the ships and aircraft suspected of supplying weapons to Syria.
According to paragraph 17 of sanctions, a wide range of individuals and legal entities of Syria is denied entry to the EU, their assets in Europe will be frozen. The "black list" includes 52 Syrian companies and 155 citizens.
In addition to Georgia, the sanctions have today been supported by Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Iceland, Serbia, Albania, Liechtenstein, Norway and Moldova.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton thanked Georgia and other countries for their support for the sanctions.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for about 17 months.
According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria has exceeded 17,000 people. About 230,000 people became refugees. About three million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say that they oppose the well-armed militants.
