The Georgian President called on the government to deal with an incident in the village Nigvziani (Guria region, Western Georgia), where there was a confrontation between Muslim and Orthodox Georgians on Thursday.

"This conflict is not in the interest of the Georgian people, and I urge the new government to do everything to ensure that such problems will not arise in the future. Such actions do not agree with our traditional history of tolerance," the president said.

A tense situation exists in Nigvziani since morning. Local residents will not allow Georgian Muslims displaced from Adjara to pray. Local residents have gathered outside the Moslem prayer house, saying that they will not allow the displaced Muslims to pray on their land.

The master of the prayer Archil Kakhadze said the Muslims will hold prayers, which is their legitimate right.

A large number of police were mobilized and managed to defuse the situation.

Mufti of the Georgian Muslims Jemal Paksadze has arrived in the village and is negotiating with local authorities. The parties agree to resolve the issue within two weeks.
