Georgia, Tbilisi, Nov. 24 / Trend N. Kirtzkhalia /

The Georgian Interior Ministry accuses former Interior Minister, Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili in violating the Georgian Criminal Code.

When Merabishvili was Interior Minister, he violated article 332 of the Criminal Code - abuse of office, spokesperson for the Georgian Interior Ministry Nino Giorgobiani said at a press briefing today.

She said that Merabishvili dismissed head of the Constitutional Security Department Data Akhalaia and head of General Inspection Vasil Sanodze in 2006. However, these allegedly dismissed individuals had the opportunity to head the departments, have access to classified information and "fully" exercise the powers of department heads.

Both were restored in their positions upon Merabishvili's order in 2008.

It should be stressed that the alleged dismissal of Data Akhalaia and Vasil Sanodze was predetermined by public protests. People considered them involved in Sandro Girgvliani's murder. Girgvliani quarreled with these people in a bar after which he was beaten by policemen and left to die in the canyon.

The Interior Ministry thinks that the article of the Georgian Criminal Code was violated in this case. The files for this violation will be sent to the Georgian prosecutor's office today.
