The process of preparation for the presidential election in Georgia and the campaign was discussed by the country's Interior Minister Irakliy Garibashvili with a U.S. interagency delegation led by US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Melia.
As the Georgian Interior Ministry told Trend, members of the American delegation spoke about the election campaign and stressed that a democratic electoral process is of great importance for Georgia.
The minister informed the visitors about the conducted and on-going reforms at the Ministry.
The meeting was attended by the members of the delegation - USAID Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia Paige Alexander, U.S. Department of Justice spokeswoman Kathryn Newcomb, spokesman of the Office of the Secretary of Defence Dale Scott, a spokesman for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour in Georgia, Wendy Silverman, director of the Office of Caucasus Affairs & Regional Conflicts of the U.S. State Department John Mark Fomershaym, analyst of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) on Georgian matters Toby Davis.
U.S. Ambassador in Georgia Richard Norland and other representatives of the embassy also participated at the meeting.
The presidential election in Georgia is scheduled for October 27.
