Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili harshly criticised Russia's activity in his speech at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly.
He also criticised the idea of a Eurasian Union proposed by Moscow in autumn of 2011.
Saakashvili stated that the Eurasian Union is the antithesis of the European Union, as it is based on the idea of recreating a 'New Soviet Empire' and therefore this plan is doomed to failure.
The Georgian president also turned to the international community asking it to influence the situation in Russian-Georgian relations stating that he is doubtful about the feasibility of their settlement, "in spite of the new leadership in Georgia".
"Despite the efforts of the new government to establish relations, Moscow continues to support the hard line. Russia is against everything new and progressive. Our efforts are unsuccessful in establishing of relations," the president said.
Saakashvili stressed that Georgia should be ready by the time Russian troops leave Georgia and Caucasus and then "the Georgian nation will take in its embrace its Abkhazian and Ossetian brothers".
"And this day is not far off as many think," he stressed.
The Georgian president admitted that his government has made many mistakes on the way of creating a new state oriented towards western values.
"I take every responsibility for this, but we made these mistakes in the course of our development and as it is known who does nothing, he is not wrong," he said.
Saakashvili stressed that the course for integration into Europe should be continued.
"This struggle should end up with a logical outcome - Georgia's accession to the EU and NATO as we are the members of this family," he said.
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
