Georgian police strengthen patrols on South Ossetia border

Tbilisi, Georgia, Nov. 25
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:
Patrols will be strengthened on the border of Georgia's breakaway region in the village of Gongeti in Shida Kartli, eastern Georgia, head of the analytical department of the Georgian Interior Ministry David Sujashvili told journalists on Monday.

According to Sujashvili, there is a distressing fact that the lands cultivated by the population were stencilled. It is indicated that this is the area of so-called South Ossetia.

"This certainly has a psychological impact on the population," Sujashvili said. "We are intensifying work with partner-countries and diplomats to the maximum. A decision on patrolling has been made. We must take into account that provocations can occur."
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
