Switzerland's ambassador to Georgia, Guenther Baechler is on a two-day visit to Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, the Swiss embassy in Georgia told Trend on May 29.

The Swiss embassy in Georgia carries out a mediation mission between Georgia and the representatives of its breakaway regions.

A delegation headed by Baechler held meetings with the officials and members of the civil society, representatives of the women's organizations and others.

The objective of the visit is to study the situation for rendering humanitarian aid for the local projects for the development of the agricultural sector.

It is also planned to view the issue related to educating the Abkhazian youth in Switzerland in order to de-isolate the region.

The Swiss ambassador was accompanied by the Regional Director of Switzerland's Agency for Development and Cooperation for South Caucasus, Rudolf Schoch and the security adviser Kevin Tait.

Large scale military action was launched between Georgia and Russia in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008.

Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
