At least two armed tribesmen were killed and seven others were seriously injured on Sunday during clashes with troops of the republican guards in Yemen's southern province of Taiz, local officials and witnesses told Xinhua.
Clashes broke out between units of the republican guard forces and tribal gunmen in the al-Steen street near the Taiz International Airport, killing at least two gunmen and seriously injuring seven others, an official who asked to remain anonymous told Xinhua.
Heavy machine guns and artilleries were used during the confrontations, the official said, adding that clashes were still going on across the al-Mikhlaf area.
Meanwhile, local residents told Xinhua that huge blasts were heard in various neighborhoods of Taiz city, the capital of Taiz province.
Armed confrontations and heavy shootings have flared in Taiz between the government forces and opposition-backed armed tribesmen who want to seize the city since last month.
