( dpa )- The official residence of Norwegian ambassador Tore Toreng in Kathmandu was burgled by armed robbers, local media reports said Sunday.

The robbers overpowered security guards manning the main entrance of the residence, the daily Kathmandu Post reported.

"The gang numbering about 20 people barged into the residence wielding knives and iron rods," the newspaper said. "The robbers then took away two laptop computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, wrist watches, shoes and small amount of cash among other things."

Police arrived at the scene of the crime after the robbers had fled, the newspaper quoted police as saying.

They said six security personnel and two guard dogs were at the residence.

"The robbers even inquired about a gold jeweller with the security guards before entering the house," Superintendent of Police Pashupati Upadhyaya said.

Police said the robbers might have entered the ambassador's residence believing it belonged to a Kathmandu jeweller .
