(dpa) - The US liaison office in the Kosovo capital of Pristina reopened on Tuesday as the United States Embassy.

"Kosovo has a special relation with the United States of America which has been forged through the stormy times of our existence," said Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu at the opening ceremony.

"By opening the US embassy in Pristina, one part of our full diplomatic relationship is being crowned," he added.

Backed by the US, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17. Since then over 30 countries have recognized its independence.

Four embassies have opened in Pristina since the declaration of independence - Britain's, Germany's, Albania's and Switzerland's.
