The current situation in Georgia was discussed during a telephone conversation between U.S. President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Dimitri Medvedev, reported Civil Georgia.

"President Bush raised his concerns about the situation in Georgia, and hope that all sides were working to reduce tensions," Dana Perino, a White House spokesperson said at a news briefing.

The U.S. has called on Russia for several times "to reconsider some provocative steps" it had taken in respect of Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in early May that she did not see the necessity for bringing additional Russian peacekeeping troops to breakaway Abkhazia.
