Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said on Wednesday that his country supports the Lebanese deal to end the political crisis, which was agreed on in the Qatari capital Doha, reported dpa.

Speaking from Bahrain's capital Manama, al-Muallem praised the efforts exerted by the Arab committee to end the crisis, stressing the importance of the agreement which ended an 18-month political standoff in Beirut.

Al-Muallem said he hoped the deal would be the key to solve the crisis, adding that the stability of Lebanon is essential to that of Syria, Syria's SANA news agency said.

After five days of talks in Doha, Lebanon's ruling coalition majority and the opposition powers clinched a deal under which parliament would convene to elect army chief, General Michel Suleiman, as president.
