China completed the evacuation of another 200,000 people on Saturday from areas in danger of floods from a lake formed by a huge landslide during the Sichuan earthquake, reported dpa.

The first group of 15 soldiers and engineers working at the lake near Sichuan's Mianyang city were also air-lifted out and another 350 were scheduled to follow on Saturday, as preparations continued to let water out of the lake.

A total of 600 workers were at the Tangjiashan Lake, which was cut off by the road since the massive earthquake on May 12, and were expected to finish work late Saturday night, the semi-official China News Service said.

Another 160,000 people were moved from Mianyang's areas of highest risk on Monday and Tuesday.

The death toll from the earthquake rose to 68,977 by Saturday, with 17,974 still listed and 15.15 million evacuated.

The Beijing Times reported that mobile cranes and special trucks with sealed containers had prepared on Friday to move 99 radioactive sources from areas below the lake near Mianyang.

Workers planned to complete the move of the unspecified radioactive sources to a designated storage area some 300 kilometres away by Friday evening, the newspaper quoted environmental official Ma Ning as saying.

Ma said moving the radioactive sources was an "urgent priority" but it was not clear if the operation had been completed by Saturday.

Environmental officials were also working to move some 5,000 tons of potentially hazardous in the same valley.

Several top-secret military facilities related to nuclear research, plutonium production and warhead production are believed to be close to Mianyang city, which was one of the worst-hit areas in the earthquake.

Ma Jian, deputy director of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) combat department, told reporters on May 18 that all local nuclear facilities were "safe and secure".

Ma said the nuclear facilities were "put under strict protection by forces of the armed police and PLA" immediately after the earthquake.

There are no nuclear power plants in Sichuan.
