As vote counting got under way in Ireland on the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty Friday morning, unofficial early counts showed the no side with a clear lead, national broadcaster RTE reported.
In Connaught-Ulster in north-western Ireland early tallies were showing the no side winning with a 60:40 breakdown, reported dpa.
Within Connaught-Ulster, in Galway West with 40 out of 140 ballot boxes opened the no result was 56 per cent while in Galway East the breakdown was 50:50. In the western county of Mayo 10 per cent of boxes had been opened and the breakdown was 60:40 to the no camp.
The constituency of Sligo-North Leitrim registered 66 per cent to the no side while Roscommon-South Leitrim had 55 per cent no.
Donegal South-West has seen 18 boxes opened with only one showing a yes majority. The vote breakdown there was 55 per cent no to 45 per yes. In Donegal North-East the no side had 63 per cent.
The tallies are not official results.
Early tallies also showed the no side ahead in Dublin and in the counties of Cork and Kerry.
Rural and working class areas were showing higher numbers of no votes than urban and middle class areas, RTE reported.
