Six suspected robbers, including a policeman, were killed in a shootout with police officers in the Philippine capital, an official said Monday, the dpa reported.

Six police officers were also wounded in the firefight Sunday evening in a residential area in the Manila suburban city of Quezon.

Senior Superintendent Magtanggol Gatdula, chief of Quezon City police, said the slain suspects included a policeman who was believed to be the leader of the robbery gang.

Gatdula said the shootout erupted when the suspects opened fire at police officers checking on reports of suspicious cars roaming in the residential area.

The suspects also crashed one of their vehicles into a police mobile unit, he added.

Police in Quezon City have been on alert following the killing of five people in a robbery in a subdivision last week. The suspects also torched the house of the victims after the robbery.
