Russian officials say five militants and four police have been killed and four more people wounded in the violence-plagued south.

The local interior ministry says police killed three suspected militants, including a woman, in Dagestan province Saturday.

A police spokesman in neighboring Chechnya says that a clash in the province left two militants and four police dead, and four more police wounded. The spokesman said the clash occurred Friday when police pursued a group of militants suspected of killings of civilians and arson.

Years after the end of major fighting, Chechnya and neighboring provinces in the Northern Caucasus region are still plagued by violence, AP reported.
