At least three people were killed and more than a dozen injured when a car exploded Friday night on the coastal road in Gaza City, according to hospital and official sources.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known but was believed to be a bomb planted in the car.

A loud explosion was heard on the coastal road, sources said. Ambulances rushed to the scene and started evacuating the dead and wounded, the dpa reported.

Initial reports said two leaders of al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas that rules the Gaza Strip, were among the dead, including Osama al-Hayeh, son of Khalil al-Hayeh, one of the top Hamas leaders. The other al-Qassam leader was identified as Ammar Musbeh. The third dead person was said to be a child.
