Actor Morgan Freeman was "doing well" Tuesday after four and a half hours of surgery following a car crash Sunday night, his representative said, dpa reported.

"Morgan is doing well after his surgery last night to reconnect nerves and repair damage in his left arm and hand," his spokeswoman, Donna Lee, said in a statement. "The surgery last night lasted four and a half hours. He's visiting with family this morning. As of this morning he's up and walking around and looking forward to his release in a few days."

The statement calmed concerns for the Oscar-winning actor after a terse statement from the Regional Medical Centre in Memphis said his condition was serious following the Sunday night crash near the ranch where Morgan lives with his wife.

People magazine also quoted a business partner of Freeman as saying: "Morgan is up and walking around. He's really sore, but he's doing better. He's hoping to be out of the hospital by Thursday."

The actor, 71, who is currently appears in the hit movie The Dark Knight, was helicoptered from the scene of the crash to the hospital after the car he was driving rolled over several times and landed in a ditch.

Freeman was driving a Nissan that belonged to a woman named Demaris Meyer, who was also injured in the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. But police ruled out that alcohol or drugs played a role and were investigating whether Freeman fell asleep at the wheel.

Freeman won the Academy Award in 2004 for his supporting role in Million Dollar Baby and earned a Golden Globe Award for best actor for the 1990 film Driving Miss Daisy.
