The European Union (EU) praised on Friday the ongoing "smooth and constructive" process of transfer of power in Bangladesh following the successful completion of the Dec. 29 parliamentary elections, Xinhua reported.

"It (EU) hopes for a stable, correct and effective functioning of the newly-elected Parliament and Government that can start addressing core issues for Bangladesh's future such as strengthening the democratic system, rule of law, reestablishment of a fully independent judiciary, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms," said a statement issued by the EU's Czech presidency.

While congratulating Sheikh Hasina on her electoral victory and appointment as prime minister of Bangladesh, the EU said it encourages the newly-elected Bangladeshi authorities to take forward a number of reforms initiated by the caretaker government, namely those related to the Anti-Corruption Commission, National Human Rights Commission, Election Commission, Public Service Commission, and minority and refugee issues.

Meanwhile, the EU reiterated its support to the people of Bangladesh in their efforts to complete the establishment of fully democratic institutions.
