French producer-director Claude Berri in intensive care

French film producer and director Claude Berri, 74, was taken to hospital seriously ill early Sunday and was in intensive care, the Paris hospital he was being treated in confirmed, dpa reported.

Berri, who had a stroke a few years ago, suffered an intracranial haematoma and his condition was critical, the hospital said.

Berri, one of the most important film producers and directors in France, had his most recent success with Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (Welcome to the Land of Shtis, or Welcome to the Sticks), which has been seen by 20 million people in France.

His most famous films are Ensemble, c'est tout (Hunting and Gathering), La Reine Margot (Queen Margot), Asterix et Obelix contre Cesar (Asterix and Obelix Take on Caesar).

Berri opened a showroom for contemporary art in the Marais district of Paris last year.
