Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said on Friday Australian troops fighting in some of the most dangerous areas of Afghanistan need the support of other coalition nations, Xinhua reported.
"Our nearly 1,100 troops are in some of the most difficult and dangerous areas and it's clear that the additional support is required," Smith told ABC Radio.
By welcoming a decision by the United States to commit an additional 17,000 combat troops to the conflict, Smith said "We have to see other people doing more" in Afghanistan where the security situation is still unstable.
Smith said Australia would give "very serious consideration" to sending more troops to Afghanistan if other NATO nations agreed to a U.S. request for additional support.
The Australian government has said earlier that unless other NATO nations contribute more troops, Australia would be unlikely to increase its soldiers in Afghanistan.
