In an apparent stalking case, Serbian police on Sunday night killed a hostage-taker in central town of Despotovac, local media reported.

The 43-year-old man took hostage a family demanding to have their 19-year old daughter, the Serbian Interior Ministry said in a statement, dpa reported.

The man pulled a gun and threatened to "liquidate the entire family." After several attempts to negotiate the release of the hostages, special police forces were called and the man was killed.

The hostage-taker had been pursuing the family's older daughter for months, the police said in a statement.
