The police chief of Iraq's western province of Anbar survived a suicide car bomb attack on Saturday, wounding two of his bodyguards, an Interior Ministry source said, according to Xinhua.
A suicide car bomber drove his explosive-laden car into the convoy of Major General Tariq al-Assal, while he was leaving the provincial police headquarters in central the city of Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Assal survived unhurt, but one of his convoy's vehicles was damaged and two of his bodyguards were wounded, the source said.
Assal is one of the senior police officers who cooperates with the Sunni paramilitary groups of Awakening Councils in fighting the al-Qaida in Iraq network in Anbar province.
On Friday night, a roadside bomb killed three people in the Garma area near the city of Fallujah in the province, the source added.
One of the three killed was a brother of local Awakening Council group, he said.
The once volatile province of Anbar has been relatively calm for more than two years after Sunni tribes and anti-U.S. insurgent groups turned to cooperate with the U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces against al-Qaida in Iraq network.
