Balochistan's provincial minister of excise and taxation has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Karachi, a police official says, Press TV reported.

Sardar Rustam Jamali, 46, was on a private visit to Karachi and riding in his car when the assailants opened fire on Thursday.

The excise minister sustained injuries in the attack and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his wounds later.

Jamali was elected in 2008 as an independent candidate and later joined the provincial coalition led by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan People's Party (PPP).

A senior police officer, Khaliq Shaikh, said that the attackers were apparently attempting to steal Jamali's vehicle.

Shaikh explained that the killing did not appear to be politically motivated, but added that police were investigating whether it was a targeted killing.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and its financial capital. It has been suffering from a series of politically motivated killings, with more than 100 political activists killed over the past several months.
