Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 20 / Trend , D.Khatinoglu/
The vice president of the Afghan Senate Security Committee said they do not observe falsification in the presidential elections and hope for people's active participation in the elections.
Presidential elections started in Afghanistan at 07:00 on Aug.20. President Hamid Karzai and his key opponents urged the people to actively participate in the elections.
Member of the Senate Khalid Pashtun told Trend that it has already been three days that Taliban has become more active and 7 blasts have occurred today. "At present, women's participation is too low compared to the 2004 presidential elections and this fact is connected with the recent terrorist attacks," Pashtun said over telephone from Kabul on Aug. 20.
Pashtun hope at least 50 percent of electorates will attend the presidential election.
The member of the senate believes that Karzai has more chances for victory. He said President Karzai's key opponent is Abdullah Abdullah. "According to the results of opinion poll, Karzai can gain 45 percent of votes, while Abdullah - 26 percent at the moment," Pashtun said.
Karzai won the 2004 presidential elections by gaining 55 percent of votes.
Karzai's key opponents are former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and former Finance Minister Ashraf Gani Ahmadzi in the current presidential elections. As Talibs are more active in the country's southern regions, it is not ruled out that their people's participation will be low in the elections.
The Afghan government is taking special security measures due to the elections. The government asked the media not to report about violence and terrorism attacks on the election day in order not to strain the situation in the country and not to agitate the people. Some 76 representatives of international organizations are participating in the elections as observers.
