Toyota has unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show a compact version of the Prius hybrid under the name FT-CH aimed mainly at city commuters as part of a new Prius family line-up, dpa reported.

Toyota did not say whether the FT-CH would actually be produced but there are indications that a production model would look much like the short and stubby compact version presented at the show.

The exterior stands out with the headlights positioned close to the windscreen and no visible bumpers. Seating four people on lightweight seats, the interior is functional with a trapeze-shaped instrument panel.

If it goes into production the FT-CH is likely to be much cheaper than the current Prius but Toyota revealed no technical details of the hybrid.
