Handwritten lyrics of the final track on the Beatles' album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band sold for more than 1.2 million dollars at a New York auction, dpa reported.

The lyrics for the iconic song A Day In The Life feature crossed- out words, corrections and additions in different colours on both sides of a single sheet of paper, by John Lennon.

The estimate was between 500,000 and 800,000 dollars and the hammer went down at 1 million dollars, a Sotheby's representative said.

The song is considered to be among the Beatles' most influential one and was written in parts by both Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band won four Grammy Awards in 1968.
