Fifteen people were killed on the spot and 48 others severely injured on Friday when a lorry heading to the auction market overturned in Dodoma Region in central Tanzania, Xinhua reported.

The accident occurred early on Friday morning at Mnenia village in Kondoa District, the online local newspaper Daily News reported.

The lorry was overloaded with luggage and passengers and was heading for the market from Kondoa town, eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident was quoted as saying.

Dodoma Regional Medical Officer Godfrey Mtei confirmed the accident, saying that 40 people were admitted to the hospital while eight others were discharged, the report said.

Some of the injured were in a critical condition and three medical doctors and two nurses were sent to support the few medical experts at the  district hospital, Mtei said.

Apart from medical experts, various medical equipment has been sent, including blood for those who suffered severe bleeding, he added.

The accident occurred amidst public outcry over increasing road accidents claiming lives of thousands of people. The trend has been attributed to reckless driving including speeding, overloading and unauthorized vehicles carrying passengers.

Last year, 3,223 people were killed in a total of 22,739 road accidents recorded by the police throughout Tanzania Mainland.
