Italians beat US 2-0 in restrained Thai "World Cup"

Italy triumphed in the "World Cup 2010 Behind Bars" in Thailand over the weekend, beating their convicted counterparts from the US 2-0, media reports said Sunday, dpa reported.

Bangkok's Klong Prem maximum security prison wound up its confined version of the international football match Saturday with the Italian team claiming the trophy, The Nation reported.

Paula, one of the prison's pet guinea pigs, chose the Italian inmates to win over the Americans prior to the final match, demonstrating the same uncanny prophetic abilities as Paul, Germany's now famous football-predicting octopus, prison authorities said.

The infamous jail organized its "behind bars" version of the World Cup with a dozen teams representing their countries with seven players each. The US came second with Nigeria third.

The vast majority of foreign prisoners in Thailand are serving sentences for drug-related offences.
