Manchester United missed the chance to go alongside Chelsea at the top of the English Premier League when they were held 2-2 in an entertaining match at Fulham on Sunday, dpa reported.

United looked to have pinched the points when Brede Hangeland put the ball through his own net six minutes from the end but after Nani missed a penalty, Hangeland made amends with a fine header.

Andy Carroll scored a hat-trick as Newcastle United hammered Aston Villa 6-0 to record their first win of the new Premier League season in the day's other game.

But despite the goals at St James' Park, the real drama came at Craven Cottage when Fulham salvaged a point just when it looked as if the match had been stolen from them.

Paul Scholes slammed in the opening ball early on but Kevin Davies equalized, only for Hangeland to put the ball through his own net from a United corner about six minutes from time.

United were then awarded a penalty on 87 minutes when Damien Duff was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, but Nani's penalty was well saved by David Stokdale.

And Fulham then went straight up the other end and Hangeland powered a header down past Edwin van der Sar in the United goal.

"I looked at the clock after my own goal and thought I had five minutes to score at the right end, and fortunately I managed to do it," Hangeland said. "I don't think there was much I could do about the own goal, but I'm glad I could make up for it."

At St James' Park, Newcastle took advantage of some woeful defending from the visitors to record a thumping win.

Villa should have taken the lead, though, when Ashley Young was pulled down by Steve Harper, only for John Carew to fire the penalty wildly over the bar.

Having been beaten by Manchester United in their opening game, Joey Barton then put Newcastle ahead with a dipping shot from just outside the area on 12 minutes.

Kevin Nolan made it 2-0 on 31 minutes, heading home at the second attempt and Carroll then made it 3-0 when a failed clearance fell at his feet six yards out.

Carroll got his second of the game midway through the second half and Nolan got his second three minutes from time and Carroll rounded off a good move to complete his hat-trick in injury time.
