A 77-year-old Singapore man has died from a lung infection related to the H1N1 virus, the first such case in the city- state in 2011, a media report said Saturday, reported dpa.

The man died at a Singapore hospital on Wednesday after he had been warded a week earlier for fever as well as breathing difficulties, said the Channelnews Asia website.

The Health Ministry earlier said that influenza and acute respiratory infections had risen in the past few weeks with cases caused by the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, being the dominant strain.

Singapore typically experiences an increase in influenza activity in January-February. Singapore has reported 19 deaths related to the virus since the worldwide outbreak of the H1N1 pandemic in 2009
